Furniture Care and Maintenance Guide
Proper care will extend the life, appearance and comfort of your furniture. The following guidance applies to leather, fabric, wood and mixed-material pieces.
General Guidelines
- Keep furniture away from direct sunlight, heaters, fireplaces and air conditioners. Allow a minimum distance of 50 cm where possible.
- Heat and light may fade, dry, crack or warp materials.
- Protect furniture from moisture, including wet clothing, spills and damp conditions.
- Prevent scratches and dents by keeping pets, sharp objects and hard items such as keys, scissors and buckles away.
- Avoid chemical exposure. Do not use solvents, polishes or petroleum-based cleaners unless approved.
- Smoke and cooking fumes may stain or discolour furniture.
- Do not sit on armrests or backrests.
- Lift furniture from the base. Never drag by legs, arms or cushions.
Leather
- Wipe regularly to remove perspiration and body oils, which can cause colour loss and material breakdown.
- Take care with jeans, cushions and blankets that may transfer dye.
- Remove marks promptly.
- Avoid sunblock, perfumes, nail varnish, flea powder, alcohol wipes, ink removers and yoghurt, as these can permanently damage leather.
- Certain medications may alter perspiration and stain or damage leather.
- Clean weekly with a soft damp cloth or leather wipes.
- Every 3–4 months, clean and condition leather with a recommended leather kit.
- Blot spills gently and never rub.
- Expect softening, creasing and stretching over time. These are natural characteristics that enhance the leather’s character.
- Rotate seating positions for even wear.
Fabric & Upholstery
- Keep away from sunlight, heaters and newspapers to reduce fading and ink transfer risk.
- Do not pull loose threads. Trim them carefully instead.
- Do not remove cushion covers for machine washing. Use professional cleaning.
- Vacuum regularly to reduce grime and wear.
- Rotate, reverse and plump cushions monthly.
- Blot spills promptly and never rub.
- Temporary pilling may occur. Remove carefully with a de-pilling machine.
- Professional dry-cleaning at least once a year is recommended.
Wood
- Use only manufacturer-recommended polishes.
- Avoid silicone-based or wax-based sprays.
- Protect wood from heat, air conditioners and damp areas to prevent cracking, swelling or warping.
- Wipe spills immediately.
- Use coasters, placemats and tablecloths to prevent stains and scratches.
- Dust weekly with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners and rough cleaning tools.
